“But they are our masters, And as we work we must always be smiling, Always.” Posted on 29th Jun 2010, 9:11pm by admin

“It is too much! We can’t do it!”
“What? You have brought back an infant?”
“We are overwhelmed! We are only human.”
“Perhaps it was meant to die, it is after all a product of sin”
“God created in Love!”
“ If God created anyone to die, it would be His only Son!”

Angry rebuke from St Vincent de Paul in Monsieur Vincent
when his helpers at the shelter tried to talk him out of bringing them more work.
They had after all had their hands full taking care of the sick, the poor, the elderly, yet now
he was bringing an infant child left on the steps of the church.
He could only say to them,
“I only know I saved this child. But there are many others who have died”

The viewer sees that he has done a lot, yet he repeatedly says throughout the movie that he has done too little.

“You must help him, because he is more miserable than you.”

I watched this film as I was trying to avoid studying.
I felt burnt out.

I was angry with the people I had sworn my life to-
Ungrateful patients,
Not forgetting, tough
working environment, and the
“realities” of life.

I can think of many things to complain about-

But I am stopped by St Vincent’s words to a young girl
starting out her work on the poor the next day,
“The poorer, the hungrier, or the sicker a person is,
The more vulgar he becomes.”

“But they are our masters,
And as we work we must always be smiling,
Always.”
