We welcomed the new batch of house officers into The Catholic Medical Guild with a simple tea reception at Mount Alvernia Hospital on 1st of May. There was indeed no better day than the 1st of May to celebrate their formal entry into the medical profession as we marked the Feast of St Joseph the worker.
Our spiritual director Father Colin Tan graced the welcome tea by celebrating a holy mass and giving a special blessing to the new house officers. Throughout the Eucharistic celebration, the music ministry did an excellent job by injecting much energy into the mass. Father Colin had also intelligently crafted a platform for us to discuss, ponder and reflect on our lives as catholic healthcare professionals.
After a sumptuous tea reception, the newly minted medical officers shared with much enthusiasm the dos and don’ts of a house officer, revealing some amazing secrets on surviving the working cultures of different hospitals along the way. We were also privileged to have O+G specialist Dr Douglas Ong and Anaesthesia specialist Dr Chan Yeow for the ethical crossroads segment. They provided their valuable insights and a catholic perspective into the world of ethics through various discussions based on the different clinical scenarios.
Not only were the new house officers inducted into the Catholic Medical Guild, many of us, if not, all of us were strengthened by the prayers and reflections during this Welcome Tea, reaffirming our roles as catholic doctors.
It is on this note that we closed the 2010 House Officer Welcome Tea. Till then, see you at the 2011 House Officer Welcome Tea! May we continue to serve God’s will through our ministry of healing =)

1. JCI Audits – Jesus Christus Imperat
“Jesus Christ Imperat” (JCI) which also means “Jesus Chirst Rules”. Audits is derived from the term “Auditus” means a “hearing/listening”.
JCI Audits sessions is a time for Junior doctors to come together for sessions to listen and learn, and to share our struggles as junior doctors.
No matter how poor we may feel our faith formation to be, all are welcome, to come and listen, share and learn, and we hope that everyone comes away with something.
